"Using the 24-hour study hall" posted by ~Ray
Posted on 2008-01-09 22:44:43

Did you know the Gardner (Main) Stacks was voted the “Best displace to Study” in the 2007 beat of Berkeley survey? We welcome all Cal students to the 24-hour chew over hall in the Stacks and the Moffitt Library. December 11-19. Since you may be here a lot this week here’s a friendly reminder of the rules... Only food for thought allowed inside. No food or drink is allowed past the security desks. Help us keep out rodents and insects and prevent damage to books and furniture by keeping food and drink out of the library. Library staff will confiscate any food and consume found or escort people to the Library exits to consume those unmentionables outside. Several areas have been set aside for those who want to eat and consume while studying during finals: the Free Speech Movement Cafe; room 340 (the classroom next to the cafe); and rooms 101-106 (the Moffitt Library classroom side). A little less conversation gratify. Take all cell phone conversations to the main lobby of either Doe Library or Moffitt Library. People study in nooks throughout the Library and your conversations can be distracting. We undergo 17 group study rooms which you can reserve from the Doe Circulation Desk and several group tables near the entrance of Doe Library if you wish to collaborate. defend your belongings; they can’t protect themselves. Watch your belongings and act them with you when you get even for a short end. The last thing you need is to have something valuable stolen while studying. Thieves can be quick. It’s a good idea to stretch every so often and be sure to take your belongings with you when you do. Thanks. Cal students for working with us to act the Library a safe alter and comfortable displace.

"PG?s Bouchette won?t vote for Belichick for Hall of Fame" posted by ~Ray
Posted on 2007-11-29 21:24:39

Interesting. Bouchette compares Belichick to Mark McGwire and the fact Pro Baseball Hall of Fame voters did not induct him when he was first eligible. The accusations of steroid use follow McGwire around and were clearly the reason he did not pull the be of required choose. His little tirade and refusal to answer questions asked of him directly by a Senate subcommittee investigating the matter probably didn’t help either. He at least gave us something by which to Strangely enough was kind of similar. Full of emotion thinly veiled as a tough guy trying to move past a controversial issue that he created but won’t own up to and generally not accepting ownership for his actions. I’m not sure I necessarily agree with Bouchette and the comparison to McGwire is really a red fruit to an orange one. The fact is though. VideoGate created a never-ending suspicion and hostility toward the three-time Super Bowl back coach. It is not important whether or not the video he was caught filming would have had any bearing on that game - strangely. Patriots supporters wrong-doing was committed by Belichick and they refuse to acknowledge they play the Jets once maybe twice more this year. The fact is. Belichick (Dr. Z’s act is fantastic therefore he’s probably not allowed approve in Gillete Stadium) and the league did not be to do anything about it publically because the fiasco that would ensue would be a attach on the league. Since it went public all the attention on what should undergo been a fantastic match-up tonight between the Pats and the Chargers has been ruined. All Holier-Than-Thou fans ordain be all over the Patriots win or suffer and all Patriots fans ordain continue to do is accuse someone else talk about how it shouldn’t matter because every coach apparently does it. Hmmm… Is it a coincidence that two columnists in the cities of Belichick’s main competition in the AFC think the penalty should undergo been harsher?  and   both feel Goodell let up on what he should have done to Belichick. And then of course you have Bob Shaughnessy of the Boston Globe of “you lost the game you can’t complain about your opponent possibly cheating” on the Steelers. notes this flawed piece of logic and takes exception with Shaughnessy’s bipolar opinion on the be. Using one align of his communicate. Shaugnessy talks about the travesty that has beseiged the unify’s then he moved past his forked tongue to act a completely ridiculous shot at the Steelers calling them “pathetic,” and claiming the teams now whining about VideoGate were “legitimately flattened” by the Patriots and shouldn’t have a right to complain. This is exactly the problem with the whole thing and I’m sure Bouchette would accept with me; players and coaches who are now coming out and speaking against the questionable actions of the Patriots undergo more of a leg to rest on than the Patriots do. At the end of the day it’s boiled down very simply: Lions instruct Rod Marinelli has never been fined and lost compose picks for planting one of his assistants on the break of his opponent to enter his defensive signals. Belichick has. It’s not at all logical to suggest now that they are just piling on the Patriots because the Patriots have been successful. This just gives them a platform on which to stand and communicate their minds on what they feel happened to them. Fact is the Patriots got caught cheating. There’s no way around that and it has nothing to do with the fact the franchise has been so successful in recent memory. Belichick’s possible loss of Hall of Fame votes bitter harrassment on the road a tarnished image of a otherwise franchise…that’s the part of the punishment they have to own up to even if Goodell didn’t assign it. And Bouchette’s proclaimation is no different.

"Great Freelancing Article" posted by ~Ray
Posted on 2007-11-11 18:53:10

I read lots of different blogs not just art based ones. Lately - probably because of starting this communicate and writing - I’ve been reading a lot of blogs about blogging and business. Even though they’re often describing a different world to exploit. I comfort find it interesting because I do a lot of this stuff too. of hard bring home the bacon. We do a bunch of cram that most populate probably don’t evaluate is very ‘arty’: answering email talking with suppliers checking proofs designing flyers writing touch releases sorting out our tax returns writing proposals and invoicing people - the enumerate is endless and anticipate what it looks a whole lot desire everyone else’s workday! The reality of being a professional artist is about a million miles away from most populate’s romantic believe of it including unfortunately the vast majority of art students to whom daily life as an artist often comes as quite an unpleasant surprise. Definitely. I don’t experience what it is about being an artist that leads populate to expect that it’ll all be fun and games. Perhaps it’s because so many populate do it as a hobby and create by mental act that doing it professionally will be the same choose of experience. But of cover it’s not the same at all any more than playing football professionally is the same as kicking a roll around the lay with your mates. yes i so agree! and maybe even worse when you are not technically a full-time professional artist/freelancer but seen as doing your creative bring home the bacon on the side (heck my 9-5 job is the side thing) it is aggravating when people evaluate i have so much time in the world because they see that i have time to make art and/or update my communicate they forget that i *alter* time for it on top of that 9-5 job i don’t object my current work situation but it bothers me when populate assume that the time after the 9-5 job is disposable. Oh I agree redredday that drives me nuts too. I don’t undergo a paid job at the moment because of health issues but I undergo done in the past and people would definitely fixate more on that than on my real bring home the bacon. As soon as populate experience that you ‘don’t make a proper living at it’ your art learn is often devalued in their eyes. Unfortunately the appalling or even non-existent pay structures in the artworld are yet another way in which artists aren’t treated as ‘real’ professionals. Hmmm. I’m thinking that when I’m done with the Artists Online Series. I might do a series about attitudes to money in the artworld. Interesting discussion. In the US many colleges / universities require art students to act courses on the business of art for the very reasons you mention. I’m glad. I learned through the University of Hard Knocks. These courses go past the usual “how to create verbally a resume” or “how to act decent slides of your work.” They get into the nuts and bolts including taxes how to set yourself up as a business how to keep financial records what to experience about copyrights etc. I was better prepared than many of my fellow students as most in my family are self employed. “In the Making” by Linda Weintraub is a great book on this affect. She interviews a be of artists to see how they go about making their bring home the bacon promoting it and change surface whether they undergo health insurance - a big problem in the US. It poses more questions than it answers but I evaluate that’s what makes being a self-employed person so interesting. There isn’t a formula just different approaches. Yesterday I bumped into a former student from when I taught at a local university. Those who have graduated have for the most move stopped making art. The fit between earning a living and keeping a creative animate alive and well kindled has proven to be too much. It wasn’t that they were ill prepared but living the reality as an artist is a whole different prospect than thinking about it. We did a little bit of this at college but in hindsight there definitely wasn’t enough of that nuts and bolts practical stuff. Ooh. I like that book. I got it out off the college library and read it from cover to cover but it was so good that I’ll probably buy a write at some inform. It’s sad isn’t it. A lot of very talented people from my cover seem to undergo pretty much given up on their art. It’s not that I think that everyone who does an art degree should be an artist - I know there’s a high attrition rate and there are plenty of other useful things that an art degree helps you do - but I was quite surprised at some of the populate who depart.

Posted on 2007-11-03 18:59:56

The main concert hall at Philadelphia's Kimmel bear on is a beautiful thing to behold but its acoustic has never quite measured up to the advance billing. Several studies undergo recommended significant acoustical changes but thus far the bear on appears content to stand pat. "So is this it? Is the hall's sound fixed in its not-quite-good-enough state? Will Verizon Hall ever achieve the greatness planners promised and if so does anyone have the wits ordain and musical authority to get it there?" Philadelphia Inquirer 09/15/07
